Introducing the Journey - Where it all starts - From seed to spice

We all know spices as the flavorful, aromatic addition to all Asian dishes. But where does it all begin? It starts with a very tiny seed!

Surprisingly these little guys hold within them the power to spice up dishes around the globe! By planting and caring for these seeds, they will grow into plants - which then get processed as the spices we commonly use today.

From these humble beginnings, even the most mundane meals can be elevated into works of art. So next time you pick up that container of Asian spices, take a second to reflect on how the journey from seed to spice has unlocked its delicious potential in your plate.

Planting the Seeds

Planting the seeds is not just a case of sticking them in the ground and crossing your fingers - there's an art to it! What kind of soil? What kind of climate? And how much water does a seed need to sprout? What are you watering with, rain or tears?

All these factors will influence whether your seed flourishes or fails. In short, you have to nurture that seed for it to reach its full potential and be ready for harvesting as those spicy spices.

The soil you need to plant the spice seeds depends on the particular species being cultivated. Generally speaking, spices prefer well-drained soils with plenty of organic matter and a neutral pH balance. Black pepper plants, for example, require loam soil with high fertility levels, while turmeric prefers moderate fertility sandy or clay loam.

Growing Up 

Growing plants from tiny seeds to spices can be an incredibly exciting journey.. How long a plant grows will depend on its species, and there's no universal answer; it could take weeks or even months.

But if you provide your plants with the proper care - plenty of soil, nutrients, sunlight, water, etc. - you can give them the best chance of flourishing in good time. Knowing when it’s time to harvest is important, too; that’s when all your hard work and attention will finally pay off!

For some plants, like onions or coriander, that may take just a few weeks, whereas, for others, like sage, that can take several months. Regardless of the effort involved, sharing the results with family and friends in tasty dishes always feels great.

When it comes to Harvest Time, I can’t think of a more satisfying feeling than looking out over a field of spices cultivated since tiny seeds were first planted - and now they’re ready to be reaped!

The process takes a lot of energy and careful attention, starting with cutting down the plants, followed by drying them so they can preserve their freshness. After that comes sorting and storing - an essential step in safeguarding your precious bounty to enjoy long after the harvest season is done.

Did you know that spice has been used in culinary specialties since antiquity?

Many countries incorporate spices into national and regional dishes, adding beautiful aromas and delightful flavors. For example, Indian cuisine relies heavily on several spices to bring out its exquisite tastes. Without cumin, mustard seed, and coriander, the magnificent vegetable curries wouldn’t be the same!

On the other side of the world, Mexican food with its load of lemon, oregano, thyme, and chili peppers. If you think about it, all these wonderfully exotic ingredients had to start off life as humble seeds – what an adventure they must have had!

From there, they grow into plants, eventually becoming our beloved spices.
